Arsenic

⏱ 3 min read

Inorganic arsenic is a group 1 carcinogen (IARC): chronic exposure is associated with skin, lung and bladder cancer, as well as skin lesions, cardiovascular disease and diabetes. It is one of the greatest chemical threats to drinking water in the world.

Sources: naturally contaminated groundwater (Bangladesh, areas of Asia and the Americas), rice and its derivatives, and some foods. Filtering water and varying grains (not relying on rice alone) reduces exposure.
