Genetics is the study of heredity and of the information encoded in DNA. Our genes set predispositions —to diseases, to traits, to responses to drugs and nutrients— that the environment then modulates. They are not a fixed destiny: most complex traits result from the interaction of many variants with lifestyle.
On this map, genetics connects with epigenetics (how genes are read) and nutrigenomics (how they interact with diet), and with goals where the hereditary component weighs heavily, such as longevity, cancer, or neurodegeneration. Pharmacogenetics and variant tests seek to personalize decisions, although their clinical usefulness varies greatly from case to case.
