The gut-brain axis is the two-way communication between the digestive system and the central nervous system. It travels along the vagus nerve, through hormonal and immune signals, and through metabolites produced by the microbiota, such as short-chain fatty acids. What happens in the gut influences mood, stress, and cognition, and vice versa.
On this map it connects with the microbiota, the vagus nerve, neurotransmitters, and psychoneurobiology, and with goals such as anxiety, depression, or irritable bowel syndrome. Interventions involving diet, fiber, psychobiotics, and stress management act through this pathway.
