Prediabetes is the stage before type 2 diabetes: blood glucose is higher than normal but still below the diabetes threshold (fasting glucose 100–125 mg/dL or HbA1c 5.7–6.4%). It reflects insulin resistance that has been quietly building for years.
It matters because it is a reversible window: with weight loss, regular exercise, and dietary changes, progression to diabetes can be halted —and even reversed— as the Diabetes Prevention Program showed. Detecting it and acting at this stage prevents much of the later cardiometabolic damage.
